Information about the author of the KALMS (R)
Test
For over twenty years, I taught Adapted Physical Education
for the Rialto Unified School District of Rialto, CA. Since 1997, I have been employed as a part-time
lecturer at California State University, San Bernardino, CA. I have taught all of the courses required for completion of
the Adapted Physical Education credential and supervised student teachers in the
process of obtaining this credential.
As an Adapted Physical Education Specialist, part of my caseload included
students with orthopedic disabilities. Assessment
of this population is always more difficult because of the many a varied types
of disabilities. In addition to the
various types of disabilities, there is a huge variation in the functional use
of limbs, even within the same disability.
In order to plan an appropriate program that included games and
activities, I needed facts concerning their functional skill abilities.
After a number of years of searching for the assessment that would
quickly give me this information, I decided to develop my own test.
In 1995, I copyrighted the KALMS
test. This test was not
published, but several Adapted Physical Education Specialists volunteered to use
and critique its merits. The field testing on KALMS indicated that a few revisions
were needed to make test administration easier and include all the necessary information.
In 1999, I copyrighted the KALMS (R), which is a revision of the first
test.
